EU Protection of Dairy Terms

Last week the European Parliament made the decision to further protect dairy terms such as ‘milk’ and ‘butter’.  According to EU court decisions and now further reinforced by the EU Parliament, these and other dairy terms can only be used to describe dairy.  This will further distinguish alternative products like soy and nut milks, butters, etc. from dairy-based products.  One goal of the EU Parliament was to avoid consumer confusion as to the labeling of these plant-based products so that they are not mistaken as containing dairy.  Industry advocacy groups such as Dairy Connect welcomed the parliamentary decision and are calling for a more united campaign against what they term as ‘fake milk and meat’ products.
