EU Industry Groups Call for Clarity Around ‘Probiotic’ Term

The IPA Europe and the European Dairy Association (EDA) have called for the term ‘probiotic’ to be reassessed and clarified. These groups also want foods containing probiotics to be included on the nutrition claims list. They maintain that the probiotic sector can deliver several objectives listed by the European Commission in the Farm to Fork strategy but feel the product category is hampered by a lack of knowledge and product information. IPA Europe and EDA believe that the current EC view of probiotic as an implied health claim and therefore not permitted on labels is penalizing the manufacturers of probiotic foods and dietary supplements. There are also concerns that the various interpretations of probiotic has led to adverse effects in the European Single Market which creates market barriers for producers.
