EFSA Calls for Data on Saccharin and Its Salts
Late last month EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) called for technical data on saccharin (E954) and its sodium, potassium, and calcium salts. In accordance with Article 6(3) of the regulation (EU) No 257/2010, EFSA launched a public call for information to collect data either published, unpublished, or newly generated on saccharin and its salts. The call for data highlights the need for collecting additional data on current production methods used to manufacture E954. Based on literature received, EFSA has begun an assessment of this food additive. EFSA had already made an open call for the re-evaluation of certain sweeteners, and the program for the re-evaluation is defined by Commission Regulation (EU) No 257/2010. EFSA is re-evaluating additives permitted in the EU before 2009.
