EFSA Assessment of Safety of Dietary Sugars

The timing of EFSA’s (European Food Safety Authority) assessment of the overall safety of dietary sugars has been revised due to the impact of the pandemic.  As of now, a public consultation on the draft scientific opinion is scheduled to occur sometime mid-year 2021 with a final adoption exoected by the end of the year.  There is a tremendous volume of scientific literature to be reviewed.  EFSA’s nutrition experts are looking to set a tolerable upper intake level for total / added / free dietary sugars if the available scientific data permits such. This advice will help EU authorities establish recommendations on the consumption of dietary sugars and offer dietary guidelines.
