EC Recommends Updated Nanomaterials Definition

The European Commission (EC) has published recommendations to clarify the definition of nanomaterials often used in delivery systems for nanoenabled foods and beverages. The recommended definition of nanomaterials states that they are “a natural, incidental or manufactured material consisting of solid particles that are present, either on their own or as identifiable constituent particles in aggregates or agglomerates”. There are additional definitions as to shape and size. The definition would update Recommendation 2011/696 EU and would help support a cohesive EU regulatory framework and align legislation in different sectors.
