Codex Published Standard for Kava Products Used as a Beverage

Last month Codex published the “Regional Standard for Kava Products for Use as a Beverage When Mixed with Water”. The scope applies to fresh or dried kava products mixed with potable water to make a beverage but does not cover kava for medicinal purposes. No additives are permitted in the product, and the product must comply with Codex standards for contaminants. Kava is a tropical shrub native to the South Pacific islands noted for having stress relief and calming properties. Its scientific name is Piper methysticum. The roots and / or leaves are commonly brewed and consumed as a tea-like beverage.
