China Releases Two Flavoring Standards

Last week the National Health Commission and the State Administration for Market Regulation announced new provisions of the Food Safety Law of the People’s Republic of China.  Thirty – eight food safety standards and four amendments were released.  These include two new standards for flavorings: GB 30616-2020 Food Flavorings and GB 29938-2020 General Rules on Food Flavorings.  GB 30616-2020 revises the definition of flavorings to exclude flavor enhancers.  It also sets forth some requirements for raw materials and addresses thermal processing.  Several excipients were deleted from the previous list, and new ones were added.  GB-29938-2020 sets forth new safety standards for spices.
