China Proposes to Add “Best Before Date” to Certain Packaged Milk

Earlier this month, China SAMR (State Administration for Market Regulation) announced a proposal to add best before date to the labels of low temperature milks that have a short shelf life. The draft language contains the wording “please consume before XXXX year XX month XX day” for certain milks that have short shelf life. The best before language should be added to labels of pasteurized milks that have a shelf life of 14 days or less and fermented milk whole shelf life is not more than 30 days. Both types of milk need cold storage. The font and other label requirements should follow General Standard for the Labeling of Prepackaged Foods GB 7718-2011. The best before date requirements should take effect on October 1, 2022.
