China Consults on New Packaging Requirements
Recently China announced implementation of GB 23350-2021 “Requirements of Restricting Excessive Packaging – Foods and Cosmetics”. China regulators wish to strengthen control over excessive packaging, mainly plastic, used for food and cosmetics products. Cosmetics are often noted for having multi layers of packaging and for using colored plastics which often cannot be recycled. Some foods have similar types of packaging, but cosmetics are specifically recognized as having more vanity packaging. GB-23350-2021 specifies the requirements, testing, void ratio, and judgment rules for restricting what is considered excessive packaging. The new requirements were issued by the State Administration for Market Regulation which is part of the National Standardization Administration.
