The FoodChain ID Certification Gluten-Free Certification Standard is intended for products sold in North America and Canada. The Standard covers the procurement, production, handling, processing, storage, distribution, and labelling of foods to validate the absence of gluten.
Certification of a product must be at the maximum requirement of ≤ 10 ppm in order to make a FoodChain ID Certification Gluten-Free product claim.
The aim of the FoodChain ID Certification Gluten-Free Certification Standard is to provide sites with independent, third-party certification verifying that their production and handling systems, quality systems, and products are free from the presence of gluten and are in compliance with requirements of the FoodChain ID Certification Gluten-Free Standard to exclude gluten.
This certification program is intended to correspond with USA Food Allergen Labelling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) / Gluten-free label claim and USA Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) final ruling issued August 5, 2013. This ruling requires a manufacturer of a food that voluntarily chooses to use a gluten free claim, the food bearing the claim in its labelling may not contain:
- An ingredient that is a gluten-containing grain
- An ingredient that is derived from a gluten-containing grain that has not been processed to remove gluten
- An ingredient that is derived from a gluten-containing grain, that has been processed to remove gluten but results in the presence of 20 ppm or more gluten in the food. Any food product claiming to be gluten free and also bearing the term ‘wheat’ in its ingredient list or in a separate ‘Contains wheat’ statement, must also include the language “*The wheat has been processed to allow this food to meet the FDA requirements for gluten free foods,” in close proximity to the ingredient statement.
Any food product that inherently does not contain gluten may use a gluten free label where any unavoidable presence of gluten in the food bearing the claim in its labelling is below 20 ppm gluten.
The FoodChain ID Certification Gluten-Free Certification Standard is not only a control and verification for demonstrating the absence of gluten, but also a means to demonstrate to; and communicate with; consumers that appropriate controls are in place, thereby enhancing consumer confidence in a gluten-free claim.
FoodChain ID Certification’s Gluten-free program provides its customers with a third-party solution which can be tied into their Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) food safety certifications, thus reducing costs and audit fatigue.
