Cases of Bird Flu Increasing in U.S.
The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed that bird flu has now been found in backyard flocks in Wisconsin, Kansas, and Illinois. Avian flu is highly infectious and has been discovered in both commercial and backyard flocks in 12 states. State officials quarantined the premises, and the sick birds were depopulated to ensure they won’t enter the food system. The virus has also been detected in wild birds prompting the closure of bird exhibits and aviaries. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) stated that bird flu is currently not a threat to public health. Since 2002, there have only been four cases of avian flu making the leap into humans.
