CAN you imagine? Aluminum Shortages Spell Trouble for Soda and Beer

Aluminum can manufacturers are having a hard time keeping up with supplies during the pandemic.  With beverage consumption shifting away from bars and restaurants to more at home drinking, there is a much greater demand for canned carbonated beverages including water, soda and beer.  Aluminum cans are in very tight supply with much of the population buying more multi-pack products to consume at home.  Additionally, there are more canned wines and ciders products now vying for a limited supply of aluminum cans.

The demand for beer has increased globally as bars are forced to close and on premises alcohol sales are restricted or prohibited in many areas.  Consumers seem to favor single serve canned beverages over bottled ones which adds to the demand for canned beverages.  Several can manufacturers announced plans to build three new factories over the next 18 months, but the facilities expansion won’t resolve immediate supply issues.

The shortage is expected to impact carbonated beverages significantly and may result in beverage companies offering only their large core brands for the short term.  Many large beverage companies offer flavors such as vanilla, lemon, lime, and other variations of soda, but it is likely that niche beverage products may not be seen on store shelves for some time.
