Alternative Sweeteners Resonate with Consumers
While consumers search for ways to reduce their sugar intake, products that provide a sense of sweetness are still in high demand thus positioning certain natural sweeteners for continued success. According to the 2020 – 2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, individuals over the age of two should limit their added sugar intake to no more than 10% of their total daily diet which averages to no more than 12 teaspoons daily. While the sugar intake of most consumers remains elevated, many are paying more attention to sugar on labels. Even though many consumers are turning away from sugar, they still want sweet tasting desserts and snacks. Brands are aware of the consumer interest in natural sweeteners, and sales of monk fruit, stevia, and sugar alcohols are all up significantly this year based on information from SPINS, a wellness focused technology company. Some dietary trends such as keto may continue to drive the natural sweeteners category.
